It strikes me that Gawain isn't quite putting John R to the sword with the efficiency one would expect, or is the computer eagerly proving me totally wrong?

I was thinking the same thing. Unless 27. Qf5!? is possible (and it looks risky/stupid), I don't see why White should have any advantage here.

edit: Gawain played 27. Bf4.
second edit: 27. Qf5 was, unsurprisingly, nonsense - 27... Qc5 (or just 27...e6) 28. Qf7 Bf2.

Was this his trick, I wonder - does he want to play 28 Qf5 now?

I was wondering the same thing, in the vain hope that my instincts hadn't completely deserted me, but apparently not!

After 29. Qc1, Qf4 looks a useful threat.

29... Re8 should be fine.

All the same, ...e5-...e4 doesn't look like a useful achievement for Black. I'd have been more interested in removing c5 and doubling on the d-file, if possible.

To my very amateur eye, Danny Gormally looks to be a pawn down without much for it vs Clive Waters on Bd 6.

However the top 5 seem to be going basically according to script.

Hmm. ...e3 looking even less of an achievement!

Mr Purdon on the other hand (whom I don't know) seems to be resisting admirably stoutly.

I just checked with Hiarcs and that's exactly what it wants to do too, it didn't like 27...e5 (prefers 27... Rg8 followed by either Rgd8 or Qc5, depending on which piece White puts on g3). As played, prefers White slightly after 29...Re8 30. Qf4 Be5 31. Qf5, which is fair enough.

Qf5 was indeed also possible on move 27 or 28, so I'm not going mad!

Gawain will win now, ...e3 wasn't good.

Lovely aggressive finish by gawain there, the first full point for the defending champion!
