I must admit I had no idea that FIDE had set such a commission up. Their work seems actually relevant with some really good ideas. The attached report details:

1) The Smart Girl Project; and
2/ Alzheimer Prevention

That is to be welcomed. The flow of ill-informed 'chess cures/prevents/is the remedy for dementia' nonsense that this report will probably generate is not.

Not that FIDE are, but that the research is being undertaken. Unless I"m mistaken that Dr. Friedland is a pukka researcher who’s published in the area in proper academic journals and everything. This is A Good Thing. If FIDE choose to misrepresent the state of that research that would be A Bad Thing.

On the contrary. I think I have a claim to have read as much ill-informed nonsense in this area as anybody, if not more so. I don’t find myself tempted to believe any of it.

Ah, right. Now I see. Friedland has been pottering about in this for a while, and FIDE are hitching a lift. I see (and share) your concerns now, especially since nothing by Friedland (nor by others) has yet been replicated satisfactorily (tmk).

It could potentially be very confusing for chess players if the Social Action Commission started being referred to by the acronym SAC
