Re: Chess on radio 4
So a draw in the second game, but can anyone answer my question about whether Lawson could have ended up in a position where Carlsen doesn't have a clear-cut continuation for an advantage, or is even worse? After 28. Rf2 Rxf2 29. Kg1 Rdf6 30.b5 does 30...Bg2 win for Black?

What's wrong with 29...Rg2+ (instead of 29...Rdf6), winning the queen, and leaving Black a piece up, after either 30.Kf1 Rf6+ 31.Ke1 Rg1+ or 30.Kh1 Rgxd2+ followed by 31...Rd1+?Christopher Kreuzer wrote:Can anyone answer my question about whether Lawson could have ended up in a position where Carlsen doesn't have a clear-cut continuation for an advantage, or is even worse? Hmm. Nothing wrong with that. Everything wrong with my attempt at analysis...Ian Thompson wrote:What's wrong with 29...Rg2+ (instead of 29...Rdf6), winning the queen, and leaving Black a piece up, after either 30.Kf1 Rf6+ 31.Ke1 Rg1+ or 30.Kh1 Rgxd2+ followed by 31...Rd1+?Christopher Kreuzer wrote:Can anyone answer my question about whether Lawson could have ended up in a position where Carlsen doesn't have a clear-cut continuation for an advantage, or is even worse? I see the moves of all the games have now finally appeared on the Radio 4 website. Maybe my email to them did some good.

possibly, but they did announce at the start of the programme that we could find the games on the website.

Although Ch 4 said they would eventualy put all the games on their website they had
clearly forgotten. The games appeared within 10 minutes Barry's email being received.
Bravo Barry!

In the first series, Lawson got 50% (as you would expect from the relative playing levels):

I'm guessing it will be that again, looking at the results so far from series 2:

Does anyone know what happened in the one against Demis Hassabis today?

I was just trying to play it (I missed it live) bit I'm getting "This content doesn't seem to be working. Please try again later."
(Ah, it's working now.)

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Has to be said that Sigrid Rausing wasn't that impressive for somebody who "plays every day"......

An interesting series. Sol Campbell was rather more entertaining than I expected, and it was good to hear from Demis. I played him when he was a small junior and he was really polite throughout the game and afterwards. I had thought it was a shame that he gave up chess, but I'm sure he made the right decision! Maybe the programme will inspire him to play a bit for fun.
As for Sigrid Rausing, the great thing about chess (unlike golf or tennis, inter alia) is that it doesn't matter how good or bad you are, you can still enjoy it with the right opposition. Playing much stronger opposition, especially in public, is either brave or foolhardy!
