Here are some good preparation tips.

1. Try and arrive at the tournament feeling fresh - avoid lack of sleep or long journeys if possible (even if it means having to stay somewhere nearby, your chess will be all the better for it)

2. Take time to have a nice wash and breakfast before beginning - so many people feel fatigued during competition and these two go a long way towards relieving yourself.

3. Drink lots during the game. It might mean needing a few more toilet breaks then normal, but keeping good hydration levels helps maintain a high level of concentration.

4. Avoid analyzing your losses. In fact try to never even look at them again, at least not for several months when you have had chance to calm down. Nothing is worse then wasting hours in bed running over critical variations trying to figure out where you could have improved - all you will get from this will be to play negatively in your next game.
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.
