Re: Cheating in chess
Lichess puzzle rating explicitly allows engine use, going back to the game, etc (unless there has been a recent policy change) so it is not a measure of very much. Even without that, puzzle ratings still don’t mean very much as there is a big difference between trying to solve it in 5 seconds and allowing oneself 10 minutes with moving the pieces.
On the overall subject of this thread, my son played a subsequently banned user for the second U8 gigafinal running. I don’t know how much this is a feature of him being unlucky, and how much this is a feature of me being better able to spot and report engine use than an average chess parent. While false bans may discourage one set of players, it is also true that a failure to ban engine users discourages many others. It also destroys the ordinary feedback mechanism that is part of player improvement - at every level of the game, but especially with juniors, there exists practical chess involving objectively unsound attacks that still win games. Unknowingly playing an engine tells a junior that their attacking ideas are complete failures when they are in fact perfectly good for their level.

Deliberately not trying to make good moves should usually work.Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 12:30 pmI'd disagree. The simplest way to avoid being accused of cheating is not to play.

Taking steps to ensure the health/protection of your on-line presence whether social media or other activity. There is a lot about this if you do a simple on-line search.

I would have thought impersonating someone else on a chess server was an absolute no no. Is there also an allegation that the substitute used chess engines, or was it just abusive comments?Unfortunately, and completely without my knowledge, a member of my team who already had access to my YouTube channel, had also gained access to my official Lichess account. That team member, thinking they were helping me, played on my account multiple times to keep it active and raise my online profile and brand.

The player was getting better results than Elizabeth Pähtz usually does. Reports say they defeated some very strong players. There are claims here of high matching rates with engine moves.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 9:31 pmI would have thought impersonating someone else on a chess server was an absolute no no. High matching rates to engines can just be a mixture of coincidence and prior game study, particularly in games that hardly leave the themes of the opening. Having someone else playing whilst pretending to be you is just a straightforward admission of guilt.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 10:00 pmThere are claims here of high matching rates with engine moves.

In a new twist Ken Regan's screening tool is to be used to detect English arbiters closely following FIDE laws. To date no significant matching has been found.

ChessTech piece which seeks to exonerate Pähtz but in the view of the present writer loses all credibility by choosing not to name the alleged aide.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
