Re: British 2015 Round by Round
In the golding-Shaw game white missed a classy 5 move mate with a neat little RH8 check followed by QH3. how heartbreaking it must be for him now seemingly completely lost.
Re: British 2015 Round by Round
It wasn't mate, was it?
After 29 Rh8+ Kxh8; 30 Qh3+ Bh4 (leaving a hole on e7 for escape). I may have missed a trick involving a well-timed Ba3. But otherwise, W is good but not mating, I think. He'll nail these next year though. The lad can play!

I ask about the extra time after move forty because unless I am missing something I can't see that it appeared on Simon Williams' clock, at least as viewed on chess24 and the official site.

They seem to have their extra half-hour now, not that it's likely to do Hebden much good. For a while he seemed to be making quite a good fist at holding a hopelessly lost knight ending two pawns down.Jonathan Rogers wrote:at least it's showing beyond move 25, unlike so many other gamesJustinHorton wrote:I ask about the extra time after move forty because unless I am missing something I can't see that it appeared on Simon Williams' clock, at least as viewed on chess24 and the official site.
Didn't he draw a totally lost ending in the latter stages last year?
EDIT: year before, I probably mean.

Stockfish on Chess24 finds then 31 Qxh4+ Kg8 32 Qh7+ Kf8 33 Ba3+ Nb4 (only move) and now 34 0-0-0 with a mad position. After 34...Bd5 (best?) it suggests 0.05 as an assessment but of course there must be concrete variations leading to a result - but which?David Robertson wrote:It wasn't mate, was it?

Does anyone on the spot know what's happening in the important game Emms-Ward? Either a quick draw or the live board not working?

Has Williams got any plan at all in this ending? Looks like aimless drift rather than GM technique.

Yes, his plan is to make me look like an idiot for suggesting it was all over a few postings above.

I know from experience that Mark is good with knights, but this is ridiculous!

Well, I don't suppose Andrew Martin will be able to feature either Jonathan Hawkins or Danny Gormally in his game of the day in round eight -
Actually, given the fare on the top four boards, he may need to look a bit lower. Which is good news for us. If he picks a game between boards 5-12, it will be one that we haven't already seen
