I was one of the players who the federation mailed to ask to apply for the CM title on its introduction as I was rated over 2200 at the time (the cost was minimal); originally it was promoted that it would actually mean something (reduced entry fees, counting towards norms), but in hindsight it is pretty much a pointless title as it hasn't given me any benefit whatsoever, therefore I would recommend not to waste your money in applying for it

Did someone really say that? The introduction of the title was well before my time, but I am not aware this was ever contemplated.

I think, for whatever its worth, you can use it to get free membership at Chess.com.

I found a drop-down menu option in a chess registration site (chess results.com) that gave the options for titles as: GM, IM, FM, CM, NM and MK. The first four are FIDE titles. NM is National Master. Presumably MK is another variant on a national title, and not a FIDE title? Certainly the FIDE rating cards for all those marked MK in the list Justin pointed to did not have FIDE titles listed.

That might make sense, actually, because although Banos is of Argentinian nationality I notice he seems to play for a Catalan club.

Ah, so a Spanish/Catalan variant of some national/regional master title. Bit like the Life Master title from the USCF and the various national level titles the BCF/ECF have promoted at times. Does MK make sense in Spanish/Catalan?

... so I suppose we can think of it as standing for 'Maestro Katalan' (in the way that N stands for knight in notation). I think the writer might be the strong Spanish WIM (current rating 2262) Patricia Llaneza Vega. Anyone experiencing multiple audio echoing in the live commentary?

I wonder if anyone at the event (I assume not) checks the broadcast once it has gone live?

Not a main line, 6...Nb6 is something of a Keith speciality though. Solid but slightly passive. Took me all of ten minutes to work out why he couldn't play 8...h6. Don't think I've seen this version of the trick before.
