Christian >Is there a list of English Champions anywhere, and when did that start to be awarded?<

Try Page 49 of the current YearBook. The list is wrong because Keith Arkell was joint English Champion with Stuart Conquest in 2008. Duncan Lawrie sponsored it in 1998 and that is the only time it has been held as a separate event. There was a gap then until 2007 such that David Welch was unaware that 2007 was the second English Championship. David Howell has won it 3 times, more than anybody else.
H E Atkins won the British 7 consecutive times. Penrose did so 6 times in a row and, after a two year gap, 4 times in a row. He also once won the British Boys.

Who is the strongest player never to have won the British Championship, although he played in it? Its a trick question. Answer at end.
Another trick question. Who has held a British Championship title since 1985?
PC Hoad won the British Senior Championship 8 times in all.
Cathy Haslinger won the British Girls U18; U16 twice; U15; U14; U13; U12; U11 twice.
Tania Sachdev in 1994 won the Girls U8, U9, U10 and open U8, U9.

Strongest,
Anand. He stopped playing after 1986. Or Murray Chandler the strongest of his period of playing in it. Or Luke McShane.

Conquest won the British Rail Chess Championship in 1985, the only time it has ever taken place. London to Edinburgh.

Must be Raymond Keene, surely?
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.
