I'm sure a lot of us oldsters will remember Arthur Hall, who was a very strong player in the 1950s and 1960s and competed in the British Championship in 1961 when it was an elite group of around 30 players. Sadly, he died three years ago, though news of this only seems to have emerged recently. I only learnt of it minutes ago myself when reading Brian Denman's comprehensive obituary of him at the Hastings forum:

Here are the nine games which Brian has quoted at the page linked to above. (n.b. click on the three dots above the board for a drop-down which allows you to choose a different game to display)

I do commend Brian's excellent selection of Arthur Hall games to forum readers. They are a joyous celebration of mid-20th century club chess at its best. The Likeman game contains something which is possibly unique, which we could call 'Alekhine's double-barrelled gun': Hall constructs the thematic rook-rook-queen battery on the a-file and, in the space of the minimum three moves, transfers it to the c-file. Any precedents?

Brian mentions it briefly, but I think Arthur played at least a season or more in the Bucks League, being tempted across the border by Alex Niedzwiedski.

His draw with Penrose in the Steiner variation ( exd5 e4) in the Marshall made it to 60s theory as an example game in Len Barden's 1963 book.
