I heard the same thing. I met with a friend at Imperial College sometime in late 90's and we bumped into him there. My friend chatted with him and afterwards told me who he was and that he was having lessons from JH. I think CJ may have been playing for Imperial around that time.Nick Burrows wrote:He once told me that he took lessons from Julian HodgsonGary Kenworthy wrote:General question:
What I would like to know is when and where CJ de Mooi learnt chess? Rapidly improve his chess. His oldest playing records. Best sources. Who were his mentors/ tutors?

re Andrew Martin´s link to the Impala Publications[/b] book and Keene´s attempts to fathom that screed - Keene told me , I believe in the late 1980s, that a guy had paid him 75,000 Pounds for the rights to make a board game out of this mysterious business.
Keene accepted, and commented that this was, then, the biggest cheque he had received in his life.
re the title of this thread, for what it´s worth, back when Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? was in hits hey day, CJ posted at Quizzing.co.uk that he had spent some three and a half thousand pounds on calls tryng to get into the hot seat.
But had not even received one call back.
From us other aficiandos he received widespread and sincere condolences.

Unlikely the late 80s: Keene didn’t get involved in the case until July 1990 (http://streathambrixtonchess.blogspot.c ... woman.html) and the legal proceedings didn’t conclude until November 1991 (http://streathambrixtonchess.blogspot.c ... ddler.html).
The Impala Publications "book", btw, was in fact a screenplay. there’s a copy in the British Library but excerpts can be found

and

£75,000 seems a lot to pay for the rights to a board game when Keene’s actual involvement was not as substantial as he liked (and likes) to pretend. I suppose it might have been paid - although then again you’d have thought somebody who paid that much would actually go on to release the game for sale to the public.
Comparing reality to Ray’s account of his involvement in the Black Queen Murder Mystery goes along way to explaining his friendship with CJdM, I feel. They are two peas in a pod in many ways.

Does anyone have any updates on this story. I saw on his twitter feed that he has gone to South Africa and no charges have been brought against him

My cordon sanitiare and perhaps his being no one would be daft enough to suggest such a misdemeanor voluntarily, he was just trying to sell the book... .

Here's the latest on the continuing story of CJ http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-sout ... s-37754525
No doubt there are plenty of forum members amongst the "tens of thousands" who have contacted CJ either in person or via Social Media to give their support.

This is actually quite inteteresting and I think good - it prevents fishing trips and extraditing people just to ask them questions (which the police should travel to ask). If you don't even have enough to generate an arrest warrant in your own country (and have done so) then don;t expect to be able to extradite people.
Compare with the unilateral UK-US extradition 'deal'.

In the greater picture of living in a civil and democratic society there always should be such checks and balances. No extraordinary cases. (I do understand the National Security arguments though). But it is vital to have the Voltaire like opinions of :-
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Which is actually The Friends of Voltaire” by S. G. Tallentyre which was the pseudonym of historian Evelyn Beatrice Hall.(1906).
The bottomline: We have freedoms better than most places in the World. There has to be a right to both sides of the argument and thus have transparency and accountability
