any of you guys had any great sports quotes that you remember for life? I had a rugby coach in my first year of secondary school who said:

"You do whatever it takes to win, people who say "its a gentlemens game" are like ugly women who say its personaility which counts. Two wrongs make a right, dont believe the hype, if you get punched in the scrum, you hit them twice as hard back. Remember this school is very posh , so dont worry about ripping their shirts at the neck, im sure they have spares.....Lets Destroy these yuppy......"

Not sure what all this has to do with chess......but here's a collection of football quotes, just replace "chess" or a well-known chess player, for "football" or the player's name, and they still work (especially No3!!)

Jason McAteer....."Steve McManaman once described Zinedine Zidane as ridiculous. You can't get a higher compliment than that."

John Barnes ....."If Glenn Hoddle had been any other nationality, he would have had 70 or 80 caps for England."

Gary Newbon......"We'll have more football later. Meanwhile, here are the highlights from the Scottish Cup final."

Mark Viduka ...... I would not be bothered if we lost every game as long as we won the league." (The first part is coming true at least)

Boby Robson ...... "We don't want our players to be monks. We want them to be better football players because a monk doesn't play football at this level."

Jeff Stelling....."Chris Porter scored his first league goal last week, and he's done the same this week."

Rodney Marsh, playing in a friendly for England, is told at the start of the game by the manger Alf Ramsey that he's going to pull him off at half time.

"Blimey" says Marsh. "At Man City, all we get is a cup of tea." :D

"The secret to being a successful tournament player lies not in avoiding blunders; it lies in ensuring that they do not cost you more than one game." - Jack Rudd

Yup, good quote that Jack

Re the Rodney Marsh/Alf Ramsey thing - I heard it was "cup of tea and an orange" but more to the point, according to some, is that the strait-laced Ramsey had not the slightest idea what Marsh meant........

So later on he asked one of his senior players what it *did* mean, and when said player had mumbled the answer in red faced embarrassment, Ramsey utterly exploded. "He will NEVER play for England again!" he shouted.

Nor did he :D

My favourite footie quote was by George Best:-
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered"

Anything by Murray Walker....

Cricket -"The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey." (Brian Johnston)

Chess - "You've just ruined the tournament!" (190-graded player to his opponent, graded 90 odd, who had just beaten him.)
And it didn't ruin the tournament as I won it.

Another George Best, along the lines of "most professionals can trap a ball further than I can kick it."
