I recall a RP event years ago, when the arbiter could not intervene without invitation, and Simon LeBlancq double checked his opponent, who moved but only got out of one check. He sank into deep thought. I loitered, waiting for him to complain. Instead he moved another piece to deliver check. "I never saw that" said his startled opponent and resigned. I think the new position was still illegal, but luckily the resignation avoided arguments.
