Downloading games from chess results

A lot of tournaments now seem to put their games as pgn on chess results (for example I believe the British did this for everything but the main event last Summer). I'm having problem downloading the files - or rather getting Chessbase (I still run CB11) to open them. They seem to be saved as "abcevent.pgn.txt" and I can open them in wordpad/word, etc... do I just need to rename the files (deleting.txt I guess) or is there somethign else that I'm missing?

TIA

Paul

You can just rename them to abcevent.pgn. You probably need to tick a box somewhere to switch off automatic file extensions, as it's that which is adding the .txt .

Thanks Roger - and the couple of people who sent me PMs.

It is indeed just a case of renaming the file. It's quirky functionality and I believe is an issue chess-results side. Some events download as a std .pgn file (e.g. Hastings), others end with .pgn.txt (e.g.4NCL Wakefield). Same browser, same settings on laptop - just different behaviours.

I guess it might depend on exactly how the organisers upload the files whether as txt fils or pgn files? Anyway - simple enough to overcoem thanks all.

A pgn file is a special case of a txt file, so it's down to what the organisers call it, or whether your computer is configured to add .txt to any file extension it doesn't recognise. Hastings and 4NCL both seem to have stored files as something.pgn, so if they are downloading as something.pgn.txt, I'd suspect something in the local setup.
