Slightly off topic, but I don't think this is true. If you wrongly claim a superior score, you are DQd. If you sign for an inferior score, this score stands.

The most famous instance of this was at the 1968 Masters Tournament at Augusta GA. The whole world (well, the American TV audience) saw reigning Open Champion Roberto De Vicenzo finish 3, 5 for a round of 65 and 72 hole total of 277, which would have tied for first with Bob Goalby, ensuring a play-off for the title. Only De Vicenzo's didn't notice that his marker, Tommy Aaron, had written 4, 5 on his scorecard and thus signed for a 66, missing the play-off by 1 stroke. "What a stupid I am" (sic) was his memorable comment.
