Definitely two rooms, or one large enough that sound does not carry too far, is the optimal way. Another good solution is having club and league chess on different nights, thus alleviating the issue of disturbing players in deep thought during a match (those taking friendly games dead seriously are as much of a problem as the noise makers themselves, and should not have their selfish way if it is affecting the general club membership - much better to lose one troublemaker then a whole team)
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Unless clubs have ownership of their building they play in, the quality of venues that chess clubs have can always be variable.

Leeds CC has just landed on it's feet at our new venue, its a WMC type of place and we have an entire concert room to ourselves, you could hold a small congress in it - well lit with perfect tables and costing nothing but a £5.00 yearly membership to the place for each club member.

We have had some awful venues though, the last place was a pub which was keen on supporting local amateur death metal bands in room next door to chess - you can imagine how that went some weeks

What's that? Weapons of mass construction?
