I have tried using three different Tools, Database options with ChessBase 10 and get the very same error message each time :
Database in use
The tools are : Check Integrity, Remove Deleted Games... and Find Double Games...
it might be the other tools also produce this error message.
Has anyone else seen this error and managed to clear it?

It's an old bug. I've seen it in 7 and 9 too.
My guess is that they haven't got file sharing done properly. Particularly when it comes to closing files.
What I do is close Chessbase and restart the application. In the past I had to reboot Windows.

Simon,
Windoze is very poor at managing file handles and locks. I've restarted CB and the problem remains. I'll restart Bill Gates and see if that fixes it. It wouldn't happen with proper operating systems I'm sure.

You could use Scid or one of its successors then.
Chessbase programmers seem to rely upon the operating system when releasing resources, possibly inadvertently.
I always backup a database before doing anything to it. Another defensive approach I use is to switch to another application or database if I have run a tool. After a few minutes I go back to the first database. My assumption is that CB does not properly monitor the closing down of a thread or process, this could cause quite a problem in a multi-tasking system.
They seem too quick to add bells and whistles, when they should try and make the thing work properly. I have had recourse to restoring from backups after using CB tools, particularly those that repair (sic) databases.
