Following on from the thread where there was speculation about the total number of chess books published, does anyone want to speculate on the total number of chess tournaments? To make it easier(?) you get to define what a chess tournament is, and set the time limits how you want.
For starters, chess-results.com (which doesn't by any means have all the results as there are other, competing chess results servers):

Total: 183,187 tournaments, mostly in a 10-year period. Last year (2015): 37,681 tournaments.
Those will not all be FIDE-rated and not all will be standardplay.
Surely FIDE have some statistics on this as well?
