The ECF Website gives us the sad news that Alan Phillips has died. Unfortunately they describe him as "British Champion 1952", whereas he actually shared the title with Leonard Barden in 1954, according to an old BCF yearbook. This really is a rather unfortunate error.
I played him once, probably in the 70s, and he was still rather good, and seemed very pleasant. Sympathies to his family.

Re: Alan Phillips
Ah Kevin - I had already done this. I picked it up when I was musing on the Rogers British Championship quiz - it's there on the first page. Coincidentally, I also played Alan in the 1970s - at Ilford in, I think, 1975. I tried to hack him with Black - he looked somewhat disapprovingly when I played 3.. f5 against his Ruy Lopez and then crushed me rather comfortably as I recall. As you rightly say, he was still a strong player and also a very pleasant chap.

Ah - it was hiding there! Anyway he deserves his own thread. I see that 1952 changed to 1954 on the ECF website yesterday.
