FIDE versus Nigel Short

Post by Mike Gunn » Fri May 11, 2007 3:43 pm

Congratulations to THE MANAGEMENT for defending Nigel (info from BCM site). This may just bring down FIDE disapproval on the ECF and do us no good in the long run but I (for one) am pleased to see the ECF sticking its head above the parapet and doing the right thing.

PS Apologies if this appears twice - this is the 1st time I've started a thread and the 1st attempt just seemed to disappear into the void.

Seems ok, what do you mean void - if you had problems email me some more details, operating system, web browser etc. or just what happened generally..

Cheers

From what I can find, Nigel Short appears to have been charged for calling the Fide Vice President Zurab Azmaiparashvili a “dumbhead” and claiming that this player "by his own admission cheated to win the 2003 European Championship."

Serious allegations I would have thought.

The second part ought to be relatively simply. Either Azmaiparashvili did make such an admission in which case Nigel is in the clear. Or he didn't in which case he (and the ECF?) are in the sticky brown stuff.

The first allegation, that he called him a dumbhead, is equally straighforward. If he didnt call him that he's ok. If he did call him that then, in my opinion, there can be no defence to simply abusing someone.

Lets hope that Nigel and the ECF have all the right answers!

I find that Short appears to court controversy and thinks he is flameproof - The ECF should not be mimicking the MCCU by stomping about firing off a whinge in a website statement of annoyance - they should be registering their views in the correct way direct to FIDE through the correct channels...my humble opinion only
