Ok, well I hope that he can keep it up. He is a possible candidate for "nicest GM in the world". When he wins, he often seems to feel a bit unhappy that no one is able to give some kind of consolation prize to his opponent.

It's true that post-mortems with GMs can be real eye-openers. I've lost track of the number of games I've played when it felt as though I had guessed or at least anticipated 90% of their moves, etc, whatever the result might have been - but then they show you afterwards the variations they had considered during the game, which did not come close to appearing on the board, and then you see the real difference.

When I was a teenager I played Smyslov at Lloyds Bank and was too shy to ask for a post-mortem! Oh dear ... (I didn't even ASK!)

Hi,

Just of the phone with Smylov, he says you should not have
allowed his h-pawn to reach h6.

Happy Now?

Oh, jolly good!

He had to be escorted to our board (something like board 15) at the start of the round by Ian Rogers, whom he was convinced he was playing ... did he chuckle about that too?

Reminds me of the time when a player came upto me after he had returned from the toilet during a match and said that his opponent has gone. He said that his opponent had set the board up, reset the clocks and was no where to be found. He had actually gone back to the wrong board and we soon located his opponent. This was not Topalov.

Quite a few early draws here - Did manage to dig out three good games though.

Englishman Dave Archibald one of the first to draw. I think he has drawn
every game bar one loss. Not sure, don't look at the leader board.

Dave said people think he's English 'cos he got his FIDE grade playing in England.

The Scots are saying he was pretending to be English as it would be easier
to get into the English Olympiad team.

That's why in 2008, England finished 15th and Scotland finished 53rd...

Maybe the British Championship needs F430s to get the Scots to enter it now?
