Hi all !
I am looking to get a heavy chess set for the lounge.

have you any comments or input on these sorts of sets :
http://www.chessbaron.co.uk/chess-X2026.htm
we use budget wooden sets for the kids rooms and holidays etc etc , but I
would like a more special set that is always in view in the most used room in the house so that the kids start to play that bit more often.
they are 8 and 10 and just getting into the game really.
your thoughts and pointers would be greatly appreciated on these sorts of sets and other heavier sets for the lounge...

If you have not done so already I would investigate junior sections of local chess clubs.

Personally I would not go for the metal sets, maybe it is a matter of taste but I would go for a solid wooden set (watch out for the design - wood can break when it meets with kids). If you live near London I would go along to the chess and bridge shop to have a look at sets, but there are many other good suppliers.

I would not buy a metal set for our kids for fear of damage (not to the set - to me for example) :o

Hi

How about one of those double weighted Wooden sets which is £36 postage free
from that site you posted, You need the correct wooden board with the correct
shade so get the set and take it to London to get the perfect match.

I study with a TRIPLE weighted plastic set on green/white mouse mate felt board.
It's a sheer joy to move the pieces.

I now have 33 chess sets (all Staunton design - one genuine Staunton).
I picked up a weighted/felted wooden set, standard size for £1.00 in a charity shop on Saturday.
(I swore I'd stop at 32 for obvious reasons).

At the end of a tournament I've been known to buy the board and set used on board one.

I absolutely hate ALL chess sets that are not of the Staunton pattern.

I was given a Reynard the Fox chess set for Christmas once.
A hideous thing - I gave it away.

Jon,
I think what you are looking for is a chess set that is functional, but also a piece of Object d'art. Cast your mind back, what have you seen that looks good in the past? I would suggest that you haven't seen many metal ones. A very classic, weighted rosewood set will look nice in any living room. If you go down to Chess and Bridge they will be able to give you very good advice and show you some possibilities. They will also be a little expensive. It is then up to you whether to buy one from them or get the idea of the design you want and buy on the Internet. If you want it to look nice I wouldn't worry about saving a few quid, so only use reputable suppliers - ChessDirect is very good.
