The British Seniors continues to be an extremely close competition. Overnight no fewer than 15 of the 30 competitors were either leading or within half a point of the leaders. The top three boards were again drawn today, as a result of which the erstwhile leaders (Norman, Crombleholme, Timson, Ashley and Barton) have been joined on 3½ out of 5 by David Anderton, Ivor Smith and Paul Kendall, with George Dickson still in play.

Ian,

Wow with Howell? What is Gawain up to? This can't be compensation.

It's hard to believe that Jones thinks he's got enough for the queen or that he thought he would. maybe he missed a backwards bishop move and thought that 16.Ba4+ was winning? Or as suggested that he missed 16...Qa5. Either way it's extraordinary.

I think Jones has good compensation.

He can play 20. a4 followed by a5, then Ba4+ keeping the king in the centre and then Nb6 and the minor pieces cause mayhem.

Looks like he chose a different (inferior?) plan!

Ben
Fritz thought there might have been, but not after d5 and e5 were played. They must be trying to avoid a draw, since it really benefits neither of them if they're going to catch Howell.

it hard to think jones missed that the bishop could come back but then again jones was playing really fast around that time so maybe he did when you play fast easy to miss things like that the calculation is not as good with speed thinking.

Wells was routinely late at last year's Staunton Memorial ... and chucked many points away in the time scrambles he ended up with in most of his games.

I rather suspect that the habits/mindset/whatever that get you late to a game are the same ones that get you into time trouble.
