John bishop and 3 pawns for a rook should be a slight plus i thought with two bishops on the board.

Yes of course - what I meant by stabilised was black square control for White

John Philpott wrote:Today's update on the Seniors. With eight players tied for the lead on 3½ out of 5, some hopes were expressed last night that the top four boards should all be drawn in order to allow some of the players on 3 out of 5 a chance to catch up with the leaders in advance of the last round. Boards 2, 3 and 4 were all duly drawn. However, there was an unfortunate development on board 1. Alan Barton, who was due to play White against David Anderton, phoned in ill after the round had started: it is not clear whether Alan will be fit enough to play in the last round. David agreed to play against Michael Dean who had been due to take a bye: this game continues.
Anderton duly beat Dean - not surprising with a 500 point rating difference. All the other top contenders drew against each other - again not surprising as their ratings were much closer together. So in tomorrow's final round, Anderton has the sole lead on 4.5/6 with eight others on 4/6, making him the favourite to win. Does he deserve to be ahead? Having played Dean, he now has the lowest average opponent rating of anyone in the top 10. On the other hand, you have to take your chances when they come...

Maybe there was no real alternative in the circumstances.

My computer agrees with yours ... although with 14 moves to play in five minutes I think it's a little premature to chalk this one up just yet.

Excellent win by Hebden! Great control throughout it appeared to me, doubtless some engine mechanic will tell me otherwise!

That's what I meant by "great control". It's always such a pleasure watching Hebden's games when he wins: they seem so logically constructed. To say "just ground him down" is rather missing the fact that his opponent was an International Master.

Similar story for Arkell - Eggleston I thought (although Egg isn't an IM yet)

As for Howell's last round... does it have to be Rendle? Seems to me it could also be Greet or Lane - but then I know nothing about these things.

That wasn't the Fried Liver.

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
