I don't find the scientific evidence conclusive but I feel about this rather as I feel about wearing masks during the current pandemic - while it's uncertain that there's any benefit, it's unlikely that it can be detrimental.

Maybe just as wearing masks makes many people "feel" safer, an interest in chess makes them "feel" smarter?

I had a head transplant when I was in my 50s. When I recovered I felt well old and was rubbish at everything. Then I started playing chess and got real good at it. Within 6 months I got to the level where I would never leave my queen en prise for more than 30 moves and if given more than half an hour I can find a mate in one everytime. Beyond the chess board I'm still rubbish at everything but at least I got real good at chess.
