Florida residents, it’s time to step up.

My opponent in Florida’s Congressional District 1 race is all-in for Donald Trump and believes in the militant alt-right agenda that is encouraging hate in our great state.

The young Republican, Matt Gaetz, that I am running against introduced a bill to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Education, and the IRS. To make matters worse, as hurricane Irma was bearing down on Florida, he voted against a bipartisan compromise to fund FEMA. Furthermore, he’s working for private development on the public beaches that have been free and open to the community for decades. Most recently he referred to Haiti as "sheet metal and garbage"-- this is despicable.

As Floridians, WE DESERVE BETTER!

Trump tax plan gift for rich

Claims that the Trump/GOP tax bill will pay for itself are bold-face canards. Rather the Trump/GOP tax bill is merely a desperate, much-needed win for their cabal's selfish interests.

Fact is, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and the Joint Committee on Taxation say the Trump/GOP tax bill adds $1-1.5 trillion to the national debt. Fact is, the Trump/GOP tax bill is a vastly unpopular and exclusive earmark for corporate America and the wealthiest 1 percent, which directly harms America because of the inherent strategic meanness.

The Trump/GOP tax bill is a losing formula and one wonders why true Republican deficit hawks didn't stop the Trump/GOP tax bill in its tracks. Here, the Trump/GOP’s thinking is cruel, scary and unsurprisingly simple- minded: they cannot garner the political support to cut U.S. entitlements since most Americans oppose such cuts, so they’ll starve U.S. social safety net programs to death with Trump/GOP tax bill debt until paying for future benefits is impossible.

No, the Trump/GOP tax bill will not pay for itself, but it will be paid for by cuts in Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security…all for a nice Christmas gift to big business and the 1 percent.

Phil Weighs in on Taxes

Phil LISTENS to his constituents and believes cutting taxes for the top one percent does NOT promote job creation, improve the economy or reduce the enormous wealth gap seen so vividly in Northwest Florida. Most good-paying jobs are created by small business. While corporate taxes should be competitive, Phil will fight for tax relief for middle class Americans and small business. Small businesses legitimately complain about regulatory burden. Phil supports a review of small business regulations without the blunt-axe approach employed by the current Administration.

Phil will fight for living well on one full-time job

Hard working Americans who work full-time should be able to afford the basics of living. People must often work two jobs to make ends meet. Living expenses in Northwest Florida are 20% to 40% higher than what a minimum wage job pays. Phil believes if you work full-time, you should be able to afford a place to live, transportation, food and health care by working just one job. That’s why he will fight to connect the federal minimum wage to the cost of living in local communities.

Those who have not served are penalizing the military

Representative Gaetz and Senator Rubio, who have not served in the U.S. Military, voted for Trump’s Tax Plan. Senator Nelson, a former U.S. Army Captain, voted against it.

Repeal of the exclusion of gain from sale of a principal residence

The legislation would lengthen the time requirements for principal residency such that service members would not have any reasonable expectation of benefitting from tax-free gains on the sale of a home.

Repeal of the deduction for alimony payments

Alimony would no longer be deductible for the person paying.

Repeal of the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC)

The WOTC has been a critically important tool assisting in solving the problem of veteran unemployment with (DOL) statistics showing 278,611 veterans were certified during FY 2013-15.

More than 3.9 million veterans live paycheck to paycheck—meaning their family incomes are less than twice the federal poverty level, or less than $50,000 for a family of four. These military families would bear the brunt of the tax break for millionaires and billionaires. Further, military veterans are in danger of reductions in retirement pay due to chained CPI. As a retired U.S. Navy Commander, it is my mission to protect the military, residents of Northwest Florida, and United States democratic values.

Phil Ehr is a retired U.S. Navy officer who rose from Deck Seaman to Commander in 26 years of active duty service. He flew classified reconnaissance in the Cold War and combat support in Desert Storm.

After retiring from active duty, Phil taught British military officers and inner-city children. Recently, Phil fought financial corruption in an international sports federation linked to the Kremlin and the oil trade between the Syrian regime and ISIS.

What stage is the election at? Is Phil still campaigning to be adopted on the ballot as Democratic candidate? Isn't the system that those who self identify as Democrats put up one candidate through internal elections, those who identify as Republicans put up another? The actual election for Congress is a second round between the two selected with the occasional independent thrown in.

the Primary is on August 28th with the General Election November 6th. That's even further away than the election, if there is one, for FIDE President.

I doubt Phil Ehr will be storming the White House any time soon - not from Florida Congressional District No. 1 anyway. The 2016 House election here fell 70% - 30% to the Republicans. It's 'safe' Republican by conventional measures - pure Arbiters' Nexus territory.

That said, one or two things have changed since Nov 2016 which may impact on the Republican vote. A Democrat candidate with an ex-Republican, ex-military commander background, could do some damage. But what with? Campaign spending to date has been $30,000 (Dem); and $165,000 (Rep)
