Rank and File letters and numbers preference.

Do you like the A-H and 1-8 numbers on the set or prefer that it not be there? I quite like it there but once started a league game with it the wrong way round. After a few moves we both decided to stop the game and rearrange the pieces correctly.

I don't have a preference, other than that if they are present on the board, they should be the correct way round. It's worth having a mental map as to which square is where and what colour it is.

It makes no difference to me. Winning the game is the main thing.

As someone who sometimes makes notation errors, I grew up with English Descriptive, I think correct lettering is a good thing.

Problem with these on-the-board grid references is that, if the board is set up "the wrong way round", new juniors often follow the grid - so opening moves 1 e4 e5 become instead 1 d5 d4 and so on!

I don't think it matters much but I do choose the settings on my smartphone programs that omit the characters.

Is that during the game?

For my part, I don't mind whether the board has the labels or not, but if it does they should be the right way round. I guess its a touch of OCD in many chess players.
