British Knock out December 2018

Post by Roger de Coverly » Mon Nov 26, 2018 12:11 pm

This is taking place as part of the CSC London Classic.

Apart from Matthew Turner and Simon Williams, I don't think the other 6, 7 or more competitors have been announced.

Previously discussed under "Live Games" as part of the 4NCL Telford tournament.

There are twelve competitors in total. I do not know who they are.

I am expecting the details to be circulated to participants later this week. A press release will then be issued.

I am being pedantic, but strictly speaking the event is not part of the CSC London Chess Classic Festival.

Interesting; will the press release explain why the increase to 12 players? If not, can you David?

I had better await the press release before responding myself.

Apart from Matthew Turner and Simon Williams, I don't think the other 6, 7 or more competitors have been announced.
As well as those two, Malcolm's editorial in the December edition of Chess mentions Harriet Hunt and Jovanka Houska alongside Adams, Howell, Jones and McShane. No confirmation of the total headcount of participants.

It's implied a three day format for each round, namely two rounds of Classical followed by two Rapid games and four Blitz games. Scores are 6-4-0, 4-2-0 and 2-1-0. 15 points required to win. Something of a Triathalon in format then. With eight players, that makes 9 days, filling the length of the event. With 12, the preliminary round and quarter final could have double round days, so that's 10 days in all.

Matthew Turner is registered with FIDE as SCO, but if it's a "British" knock-out, perhaps there should be Welsh and Irish participants.

There will be eight playing days. The three day format only applies to the Semi Finals, the 3rd Place Match, and the Final.

The other four players not mentioned earlier in the thread are: Alan Merry, Ravi Haria, Jonathan Hawkins and John Nunn.

Pairings are:

Preliminary Round

1. Jonathan Hawkins v Jovanka Houska
2. John Nunn v Alan Merry
3. Matthew Turner v Ravi Haria
4. Simon Williams v Harriet Hunt

Quarter Finals

1. Mickey Adams v Simon Williams or Harriet Hunt
2. David Howell v Matthew Turner or Ravi Haria
3. Gawain Jones v John Nunn or Alan Merry
4. Luke McShane v Jonathan Hawkins or Jovanka Houska

Semi-finals at DeepMind (remember that part of the main LCC Grand Tour event is also being held at DeepMind).
Final back at Olympia.

3 games going to Rapid play. The Doctor proves that the KID can still confuse strong players.

Watching on Chess24, I think the DGT board is struggling to keep up with blitz and Armageddon games, but it appears that John Nunn lost on time in a completely won position against Alan Merry in the Armageddon tie break, if the transmission of moves and clock times is correct
