Ignorance is Bliss
Was anyone else impressed (not) by the infantile attitude of the HIGNFY panel towards the match during the Friday, November 30th edition. Pathetic !
I have a good deal of respect of Ian Hislop and Paul Martin (Merton) and Jennifer Saunders. I can only hope that they were forced to talk nonsense by the scriptwriters.
If I was the ECF PR Director and / or Malcolm Pein I would invite all three to one of the thriving CSC schools and / or the London Chess Classic.

Re: Ignorance is Bliss
For the record, the episode of Have I Got News For You (HIGNFY):
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b ... -episode-8
Chess 'coverage' is from 15:15 to 17:30 (roughly). They managed to spin it out for 2 minutes.
Probably not worth getting too worked up, but still disappointing (and rife with inaccuracies).
Hopefully there is not more in the extended version (HIGMNFY).

There' s a few seconds more at about 17:55 to 18:05 - a joke about why the players were sealed in a soundproof box.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Sat Dec 01, 2018 11:45 amFor the record, the episode of Have I Got News For You (HIGNFY):

Surely "infantile" is the whole point of HIGNFY. If you are a member of the target audience it the programme's main appeal.John Upham wrote: ↑Sat Dec 01, 2018 11:12 amWas anyone else impressed (not) by the infantile attitude of the HIGNFY panel towards the match during the Friday, November 30th edition.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

No group should feel above having the micky taken out of them, and some of what was said was actually quite amusing. But my main objection is the fact that it is the only "coverage" of the match which the BBC saw fit to show.

It was on the BBC News channel the day of the playoffs. Did it make News Bulletins on BBC1 or BBC2?Reg Clucas wrote: ↑Sat Dec 01, 2018 1:28 pmBut my main objection is the fact that it is the only "coverage" of the match which the BBC saw fit to show.

Well, yes. They flaunt their ignorance on every topic they touch as the sole justification of the immense sums they are paid out of our license fees. Why should chess get an exemption?Brian Towers wrote: ↑Sat Dec 01, 2018 1:12 pmSurely "infantile" is the whole point of HIGNFY. Re: Ignorance is Bliss
Just watched it on Catch Up. It was OK just a piece of fun. Any news is good news.
The fear of 'draughts' gag because the players were in a glass cube was quite good,
very close to the line when explaining Armageddon 'Black wins....so unlike life then. '
If they do get complaints it will be about that one.
Thought they might used have CHESS or BCM as the guest publication.
Main media only became interested when the rapids kicked-off. SO it appears if
we must have them then at the end of the match is more media friendly.

Simon Williams' cat has the clip
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
