Lorin's answer, above, to that question says a lot about the difficulties of playing competitive chess in the current climate.

The danger pointed to by this unfortunate incident is that the perceived threat of cheating may become greater than the actual cheating taking place,.and the inadvertent technical infringement of anti-cheating procedures more dishonoured in the observance than in the breach.

Looks like Lorin and Adam C Taylor have pulled out of the Championship. I think Adam has been struggling to find form in this event.

It is quite a fast time limit now not sure that is helping.

I should imagine that over the last year, since the rule came into force at FIDE rated events, all sorts of very strong players have forgotten the rule.

The rule has been around for much longer than that. What has changed is that the determination of events in England to opt out of it is crumbling.

In any case, isn't there a reminder at the start of each round about what you may and may not do with mobile devices? I realise that some players evade these by arriving late, but have little sympathy in that case.

I read Lorin's comment that he may not play again in FIDE rated events in England. The fact is that in most federations it is now second nature that you do not wander around the venue with a mobile phone on your person.

Lorin admitted in his post that he made a mistake but it seems that his major concern is about his opponent's approach. However, perhaps I'd better say no more in view of Matt Bridgeman's post on the previous page of this thread.

Adams won with Black in the British a few years ago, going back to my "1 e4 e5 works Ok for Adams when playing against a player of comparable stature" theme. Dull draw last year, though.

That is certainly a good way to describe how Adam Taylor lost to Jack. One-sided nature of Wadsworth v Howell shows how hard it can be to suddenly play a 2700 after playing a string of players averaging around 2250.
