OK, I meant some of the photos (only one or two) look like they were taken some time ago - old pictures being recycled. But it is good to have any pictures at all! And most are probably quite recent (I can't tell for most of them).Adam Raoof wrote:Actually the photos look quite freshChristopher Kreuzer wrote:Some of those photos look rather old...Adam Raoof wrote:Contenders for the Championship

Re: British Chess Championships 2011
I have looked at the updated entry list for the championship, and I decided to cross check the qualifiers list as well
Could somebody shed light on how Owen Phillips and David Farrall qualified, all other entrants have pre-qualified

Re: British Chess Championships 2011
Fair enough, you would wish the qualifiers list would also be updated more frequently as well
Can somebody also clarify why the reserve list players are allowed to enter this early, I thought that they only qualify if the qualifier from the same event doesn't take up their place, considering the deadline for entries haven't passed yet it seems a little premature to allow them to enter

Re: British Chess Championships 2011
This year's policy seems to be to offer places to players who have played in a number of qualifying events without scoring quite enough points in any one event to qualify. If players say they will play if they're in the Championship, but not if they are in the Major Open, it's reasonable to notify them sooner rather than later and in any event before the first entry fee deadline.Alan Walton wrote: Can somebody also clarify why the reserve list players are allowed to enter this early, I thought that they only qualify if the qualifier from the same event doesn't take up their place, considering the deadline for entries haven't passed yet it seems a little premature to allow them to enter

Personally it just seems to look like another way of making money, if this is the policy then it contradicts the rules for qualifying on the Championship websiteRoger de Coverly wrote:This year's policy seems to be to offer places to players who have played in a number of qualifying events without scoring quite enough points in any one event to qualify. Re: British Chess Championships 2011
On a slightly different tac...I see the 5-day Afternoon event is listed as being 7 hour sessions according to website (Entry).
Is this true, or is it really 4 hours like the Morning event..?
There seems some curious differences in the pricing of some events....and the prizes in relation to entry fees also look a tad odd....maybe this is the price for playing at top quality venues. Nontheless, I hope these attract good levels of interest....
Also, I hope the opportunity is used to promote chess and generate good publicity. No doubt the Yorkshire Post & other regional papers will be reporting & taking pictures, etc...
Hopefully, some publicity for the 4NCL Northern League will be on display. Some copies of John Carletons match reports & pictures from this season would make good adverts.
And of course, the Manchester (late Summer) Congress follows in early September, so no doubt players will be snapping up entry forms for that event....and others.

With respect, Roger has no idea what the policy is. If you really want to know, why not ask Neville Belinfante via this Forum?Alan Walton wrote:Personally it just seems to look like another way of making money, if this is the policy then it contradicts the rules for qualifying on the Championship websiteRoger de Coverly wrote:This year's policy seems to be to offer places to players who have played in a number of qualifying events without scoring quite enough points in any one event to qualify. The main point is though players on the reserve list, should not be able to enter before the deadline date
What happens if the player who actually qualified enters, would the player from the reserve list lose his place due to the fact that he hasn't actually qualified

Common sense tells me that players from the reserve list who have already entered have either a) qualified, or b) the player who has qualified has notified us and dropped out.Alan Walton wrote:The main point is though players on the reserve list, should not be able to enter before the deadline date

I do however play in the same teams as at least two people who have told me they have been offered places, despite playing in a number of qualifiers without success.Adam Raoof wrote: With respect, Roger has no idea what the policy is. Re: British Chess Championships 2011
You might be right. You are not the first person to claim this on the Forum. But would you be the first to actually tell me who they are so I can investigate?Roger de Coverly wrote:I do however play in the same teams as at least two people who have told me they have been offered places, despite playing in a number of qualifiers without success.Adam Raoof wrote: With respect, Roger has no idea what the policy is. Re: British Chess Championships 2011
So the answer is that you say that you have heard from another player (who you won't name) that he was contacted by someone (who we don't know) and offered a place in the British Championships (which they obviously didn't take up).Roger de Coverly wrote:You know who I play for.Adam Raoof wrote: But would you be the first to actually tell me who they are so I can investigate?
When you have something serious to say, PM me and I will address it.

Re: British Chess Championships 2011
Regarding (a) they shouldn't be on the reserve list (it maybe just that the qualifiers list isn't up to date), on (b) it would be useful for transparency to say which congress they played in to get on the reserve list, so public can check to see if actually is the caseAdam Raoof wrote:Common sense tells me that players from the reserve list who have already entered have either a) qualified, or b) the player who has qualified has notified us and dropped out.Alan Walton wrote:The main point is though players on the reserve list, should not be able to enter before the deadline date
