Would 34...f6 by Hawkins been uncomfortable for mark eg. Nf3 or g6 Ne3!

34...f6 met by 35.Qc6 apparently. You are right that 34...f6 35.Ng6/f3 can be met by 35...Ne3.

Maybe Qc6 as the e pawn would be weakened. But this is a nice position for Hawkins as I think he can probe forever and take a draw if he needs it based on what is happening on board 2. He has no weaknesses.

27 Rd3 a big mistake on board 3. Can someone with an engine see if 31..Rf2 just wins - looks that way to me. And I suppose check isn't bad either....

yang-Fan has lost just 31...Rf1 then Rf2 and it's mate or piece down in the ending

Maybe Rc1-c4 is just about ok but it feels like a computer line, personally I wouldn't be happy with my knight stranded on c6 like that

The mate after 31...Rf1+ 32.Ka2 Rf2+ 33.Kxc3 d4# is nice.

One computer line is:

34...f6
Qc6 Qxc6
Nxc6 Rc8
Rc1 Rc7
Rc4 Kf7
h4 Ke8
h5 Kd7
Nb8+ Kd6
Na6 Ra7
Nb8 Nb4

The knight stranded on c6 ends up on b8, so obviously that's OK then...

I agree. I guess neither of them saw the ...Ne3 idea.
