Either way, it should be available for public consultation next time - I had been told that this was the intention last time, but I don't recall any publicised consultation/request for feedback.

Are you sure that you are not at the Euston Square Hotel hiding in one of the alcoves, Mick? I suspect that proceedings here may have been more enjoyable than the Bury v Morecambe game.

The tellers are back. Will the white smoke appear here first or on twitter?

The answer of course was neither. The results quite correctly appeared first on the ECF website.

The results were:

President: Andrew Paulson (169 v 106 Roger Edwards v 1 neither candidate)
Chief Executive: Phil Ehr (257 v 18 Andrew Moore)
Director of Finance: David Eustace.
Director of Home Chess: Alex Holowczak
Director of International Chess: David Openshaw
Director of Junior Chess & Education: Lawrence Cooper
Director of Membership: David Thomas
Non-Executive Directors: Sean Hewitt (150) and Julian Clissold (145) (v Angus French 133 and Jack Rudd 111)

FIDE delegate: Nigel Short

Finance Committee: Mike Truran (Chairman), Ray Clark and Ian Reynolds

Governance Committee: Chris Majer (Chairman), Mike Gunn, Richard Haddrell and Andrew Leadbetter.

It is understood that the Board will be asked to appoint David Sedgwick as an additional member of the Governance Committee.

Against waffle, the gods themselves contend in vain.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea...

...I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

The SCCU motion to rescind the Board's decision requiring ECF membership of all players in events organised and graded by the ECF to be rescinded in respect of school team competitions was carried overwhelmingly on a show of hands and somewhat more closely (143 v 96) on a card vote.

The meeting closed just before 6.00 p.m.

Pleased to see Julian elected, and it appears the MCF voting strategy wasn't necessary, but only just

I'm sure that Coleridge was interrupted by a man from Porlock asking him whether he had renewed his ECF membership.

That draws one red line against extensions of compulsory membership. It's a shame the SCCU didn't have the courage to propose winding it back from county matches and Internationally rated competitions.

This is excellent news. It represents a victory for common-sense.

It's also telling that the individuals who brought in this crass policy (and who were obviously in such a minority at the meeting judging by the show of hands) were still determined to have their way by forcing a card vote.

So when the SCCU motion won overwhelmingly on a show of hands a card vote was requested and permitted - when their motion lost narrowly by a show of hands and asked for a card vote it wasn't permitted :?
