If the arbiters aren't going to enforce a rule saying players will be defaulted if they walk off with a bag with a phone in it unless asked to do so then either the rule, or the arbiters, should be changed.
There are apparently 6 arbiters on the afternoon team according to Chess-Results. Matthew Carr is most likely concentrating on the live boards. So that takes it down to 5. According to Andrew's post, the remaining 5 arbiters appear to be spread out over at least two rooms, so it might be there is a 3+Matthew/2 split. Without bothering to add them up, there seem to be something like 300 players in the afternoon. In this context, with large numbers of people coming and going from the playing hall (some of whom won't be players, I imagine), it's probably not so easy to see one individual take one bag out of the room; so you might have to investigate claims like this reactively from a player.

The British isn't a Round Robin event where 2 arbiters supervise 10-12 players. You have to adjust your expectations of what the resources available can do accordingly.
The suggestion made in previous posts was that the arbiters would only enforce the rule if asked to do so and would turn a blind eye otherwise. That's a very different situation from not enforcing the rules because you weren't aware an infringement had occurred.

I don't see where anyone has said that. What have I missed?

Lorin is an excellent Chess Coach and player whom I have admired for many years and I have on many occasions complimented his skills to parents as I have seen many students who come to me have had some positive influence from Lorin. I would say he is one of the best Primary School level Chess Teachers in the UK and one of the better Coaches I have seen and as a trained Teacher (PGCE) my opinion carries some weight here. I only have good things to say about Lorin. We all make mistakes and he made a mistake to carry his mobile phone in his bag. When I make a mistake I put my hand up I apologise I move on. I would welcome an apology for causing me this level of stress then we have a beer and then we move on.

did this happen
Mr Storey says with strong conviction to the arbiters 'I don't want you to default him, I want him to go in there and resign'. I asked why, and he said 'to save your reputation'.

i think that in that quote, you are saying that he was Guilty of doing it and a drink and a beer will not cut it as if i was Lorin.
i know you also had issues with other parties and at the end of the day, you are damaged your own reputation

I do hope Charlie doesn't post on here. I totally agree that his behaviour sounds very poor. I would say this though, I think he has suffered some professional set backs and has been to a certain extent marginalized and alienated. I have a few concerns regarding his general mental health, and I hope he has a strong friend and family network around him that perhaps could help him get some help if he needs it.
Hi Matt you are correct bit of a sob Storey so I will not bore you with too many details as we will both end up crying.

i use speed chess as a way to deal with a mild anxiety disorder, I thought I had OCD for it but after seeking support from a Talking therapy group "Talking Matters" it was diagnosed as addiction and not OCD - Apparently OCD is when you think something bad will happen and losing online rating points does not qualify!

The net effect means sometimes rather than studying chess in correct ratio I play too much speed chess online hence my 3009 rating at Chess24.com

Gaming has now officially been diagnosed as a mental health disorder and parallels have been drawn with my own speed chess coping mechanism.

I traced my anxiety speed chess addiction back with specialists and it seems it was caused by having to live in a homeless shelter at age 14 which was when I ceased being Captain of the football team and withdrew from my football friends and found comfort with chess, chessplayers and chess parents which in turn opened a door to education. I opened the door and eventually went to University finishing top of the class in Computer Forensics followed by top of the class at Kings College London in teaching Computer Science and a Part Masters in Teaching and Learning!

I would say if you have a mental health issue on any area of mental health that talking about it is a really good idea I have actually seen significant improvement in my slow play game. In-fact I have helped many people with mental health issues and I have a lot of knowledge and research here.

Thank you for your concern about my mental health and sharing that with the Chess Community that was extremely considerate.

Would anyone like to hazard a guess as to the number of move(s) that will be played on board four in the Championship in round 7 ?

There are previous Richard vs Nick games in the db and total number of moves is

8 + 9 + 1 = 18

Could we break the Miles - Reuben record ?
Pert-Pert sounds like a telephone ringing.

Pert v Pert may be a short game, but not for the reasons we were expecting

Compare and contrast

Ah yes! My memory remains in good nick. Poor Lorin D'Costa has been this way before. He really does need to choose his opponents more carefully

Nigel went to find an arbiter and returned with Roger Edwards who explained that as the phone had only beeped once that 'technically Nigel had not lost'. The game continued merrily on it's way and Nigel defeated Lorin D'Costa. I wonder if anyone can clarify Roger Edwards' clarification, or do Grandmasters get a special exemption from rules they don't like?

So who can guess how many moves Howell-Adams will be drawn in? I'll kick off with 18.
21. Not bad.

I think deep down, everyone expected the only decisive game in the top 5 (potentially 6?) boards to be Pert-Pert.

When Lorin was defaulted, does Charlie get the rating points. Just a thought.
