Slaughter of the GMs
As I write: Ward has lost; Howell is dead; Arkell is dead; Williams too
In fairness (to myself if no other), when I posted this, the relevant games had been 'silent' for some time. I assumed all parties had indeed resigned (as was plausible), but refrained from assuming that since Derakhshani - Arkell was clear but awkward; while Palliser - Howell seemed settled beyond redemption, but with play. In fact, I've learned subsequently (obviously) that there had been a break in the online 'feed'.

Of the eventual results? Well, I'm quite shocked by Palliser-Howell. 51 Rd5+ - whatever was Palliser thinking when 51 f4 seems so obvious? Richard will be banging his head off walls tonight, having outplayed Howell throughout. And Keith Arkell? Well, the win wasn't straightforward for even a talented youngster. So hat-tip to Arkell for hanging in there

I think Keith will be pretty pleased with the result, given what could have happened - and everybody running their engines in a nice comfortable lounge were so quick to write him off, but he doesnt have that GM title for nothing !

I did think Adam Ashton would have a good tournament.
He's made good use of his 2 whites; his first black is as hard as it comes

round 3 pairings

Pert-Palliser is already showing as 1-0 on Chessbomb, is there a reason for this?

Very strange, not even a game record yet - did palliser default in some way?

According to Simon Williams' cat, the default is actually the other way round, and Nick Pert is unwell.

I hope that does not nip any GM norm in the bud already? (very much a downside to a nine round event, if so)

Howell - D'Costa is almost certain to be played on increments from about move 20.

I think there is a rule that allows norms in case of default of a round (ie an 8 round norm)

They are still following Portisch - Matanovic, Yerevan 1965.

.... but 10.h4 is definitely not a 1965 move, very 2019.

I'm pretty sure Richard has got a ton of GM norms already ( he's a decent strength IM who tends to score especially well in the British) but getting the rating high enough is the impossible hurdle to jump, as I doubt he wants to waste tens of thousands of pounds traveling the world looking for tournaments

If you want to see the (probably fully updated now, apart from maybe a couple where the records no longer exist) list of ENG norms, in this case for the GM title, see here:

https://ratings.fide.com/title_norms.ph ... ountry=ENG

According to this:

https://ratings.fide.com/title_norms.ph ... 2&title=GM

Richard Palliser has one GM norm, scored in the 4NCL in the 2010-11 season, not the British.

[Er. not sure why the norms by Simon Williams are listed there, as he has the GM title ratified already!]

The main site seems down again which is not much of a surprise.

?!

Most actual GMs do not have "tonnes" of GM norms!

The FIDE Handbook has
1.41c

For a 9 round tournament, if a player has just 8 games because of a forfeit or Bye, but he has met the correct mix of opponents in those games, then if he has a title result in 8 games, it counts as an 8 game norm.
