The difference in performance ratings between the players paired on board three caught my eye.

There is a difference between breaking the rules and cheating.

Have the rules been broken? Yes. Is loss of the game a reasonable penalty? Absolutely.

I don't know all the details of this case, but to attack someone's reputation (as alleged) is beyond the pale. There is no evidence of cheating or intention to cheat. Was Lorin playing like Karpov, or has he ever?

Really, nonsense like this is enough to make amateurs like me consider giving up serious chess for good, before we become the victim of smears ourselves...

I know what you mean, but there is a simple solution. Just don't wander around the venue with a comms device on your person. It isn't as though there aren't constant reminders, although in England perhaps even more are needed.

Big gaps on 2 and 4 too, but yes more noticeable when the players have the same points total

White's opening looks even worse than the sort of rubbish I play. Stockfish has White virtually losing by move four

btw is Richard on for a GM norm does anyone know?

With White he has been imperious. With Black, not so impressive.
