Couple of questions/points:

- When was the last time IM Malcolm Pein (playing this year) played in the British?
- Matthew Wadsworth and Adam C. Taylor listed as FMs, though they were recently ratified as IMs.
- Anyone know why IM Brandon Clarke is in the Major Open, not the British?
- Of the 55 entries, only 8 are non-ENG (two AUS, one each LTU, NGR, IRL, POL, GCI and JCI).

i.e. Australia, Lithuania, Nigeria, Ireland, Poland, Guernsey and Jersey.

Will that relative lack of non-ENG players affect norm chances?
No Scottish or Welsh players!
One of the GMs was born in Wales, anyone able to guess which one?

I've narrowed it down to Ward, Emms, Tan and Fernandez.

(It is not a WGM is it?)

OK, it is Justin Tan!

Described as "Welsh-born" here by John Saunders.

Woodbridge: Chess prodigy Justin aims to be a grandmaster

Should have remembered from that article (which I think I have referred to before here): "Originally from Wales, Justin moved to Melbourne, Australia, at seven but decided to study in the UK for his last two years of school."

According to
https://www.britishchesschampionships.c ... ants-2019/
total entrants (including multiple entries) 1101

That exceeds Hull which is quoted from
https://www.britishchesschampionships.c ... ants-2018/
as 1015

Roger will be pleased to see that there will be a highly competitive contest for an under 2050 rating prize ;)

I've extremely careless managed to let my own rating slip above 2350 :(

The entry list is quoting ratings as published 1st May, so the the final 4NCL weekend is not included. It remains to be seen whether they will use those ratings for seeding and grading prize eligibility.

Does anyone know when Malcolm Pein last played at the British (would he be responsive to a personal enquiry)? Are there lists of participants going back over the years to be found online anywhere, or would a database of this have to be constructed from something like the results lists that were (for a long period) published annually in BCM (not sure if they still do that)?

Am I right that Matthew Wadsworth and Adam C. Taylor bring the number of IMs to 15 rather than 13?

And why not 16 IMs? Is it a personal choice by Brandon Clarke to play in the Major Open - I thought as an IM he qualified by right for the British, or am I mis-remembering what the current rules are? Maybe he entered too late to avoid the £75 late entry fee for the Championships proper?

He played in 1997 (including a win against Speelman) but without checking the rating list year by year I'm not sure if I've missed any.

I'm sure that you'll get a response but what that is will depend on the nature of the enquiry :)

Just search any large games database for the British Championship or Malcolm by name.

John Saunders' Britbase has coverage of British Championships, although the older ones are more comprehensively documented.

Subsequent to writing that, I received a circular email about the weekend events that pairings would use the 1st July FIDE list.

Malcom tells me:
You or anyone may reply on my behalf. The last time I played was 1997 I think. Played Ward Gallagher Speelman Conquest Bates Emms Sasikiran. Remember being smashed flat by Adam Hunt, rest a bit of blur...
