I feel silly now. Of course looking at a games database would provide the answer! (Thanks to those who replied - not to put any pressure on Malcolm, but I hope he does well!). He has also played at other events over the years, IIRC, particularly Bunratty, but I don't think he is the most active of England's IMs (though there are others who have played even less).

Dare I ask (prompted by Richard Bates demurring here that “strong player who is an IM” is a better description than "strong IM"), whether Malcolm is a, er, strong IM? Or would that be impolitic? (Basically, I'm trying to get an idea of how good a player Malcolm was in his youth when he gained the IM title, and whether Malcolm is arguably a better player than his rating would suggest - well, I guess we will find out!)

I also see that no IMs or GMs have entered the senior events (O50 and O65) - I thought quite a few had in previous years. I am now trying to work out which of the British Championship entrants are eligible for the senior events... (quite a few, I think).

The over 50s I have so far are (some are over 60s, but none are over 65s): Pein, Emms, Arkell, Ward, Lane, Pigott, Bradbury, Zapolskis, Wall, D. Ledger, A. P. Smith (among the titled players). Along with Moore, Crickmore and Holland among the non-titled players.

The oldest appears to be John Pigott (born 1957).
The youngest appears to be Jacob Yoon (born 2006).

A preview in the Guardian, though I think that when Leonard writes "In the 20 years since Howell and Jones debuted as pre-teen talents, not a single player has been able to break the 2550 rating barrier" he forgets Jonathan Hawkins. Arguably Jonathan has made himself forgotten, having not entered on these last four occasions. Even now I am still very surprised that he declined to defend his title (I assumed a row over conditions at the time, but apparently not).

I think, on the basis of past reporting that he basically means nobody younger than Howell/jones has broken 2550. A literal interpretation of the words would include a number of others I guess.

maybe, though since Hawkins has won the British twice in the last ten years, he would seem to be the Murray to Adams' and Howell's Federer and Djokovic and might have expected a mention!

Yes, but he has a terrible injury.

Strange analogy given Murray is only seven days older than Djokovic, and he isn’t playing in the tournament either!? ;)

thinking of titles won - don't expect too much from a tennis analogy! admittedly the real query was with no one else having made 2550+ of late, but since that particular person has also won two British titles recently ... I was surprised he was not even mentioned. (Not that it much matters)

But where does Gawain fit in? ;)

only one title, so he cannot be Murray. Not sure who he is instead. Will he be happy with Wawrinka? :) The tennis analogy does have its limits ...

Two surely? He’ll have to be Nadal. Left handed as well.

oh, Gawain has two titles, I now recall. Yes, he can be Nadal, then. Not sure what to do with Luke and his zero!
