many members don't even know that this is happening or who is involved.
I wonder what percentage of ECF members care to any degree about ECF elections?

Let us say that there are 10,000 members.

Do approximately 200 give a damn about who is elected or more or less?
I've very rarely heard anyone at my club comment about "ECF politics".

It's often claimed that one of the few things which agitates club players is having a grade. However, when the ECF canvassed opinions in 2019 about the proposed change to monthly four-digit grades, only 931 (8%) bothered to respond; this was out of a total of 11,580 members on 1 March 2019. 92% did not participate. I suspect that there is an even greater level of indifference about who the next CEO turns out to be.

That is probably as good a guess as any, but is not a justification for taking the membership for granted. I imagine many of the membership would not choose to be members if they did not have to. If the handful who comment on this forum on this subject are in any way representative of the 200 who give a damn then I think we can say there is something wrong with current practise.

Without necessarily dissenting from your general argument, this may not be an unusually low take-up percentage for a survey.

Yes - also, players may not care what the numbers are, they are still numbers. So a 150 claiming to be better than a 149, is no different from a 1850 claiming to be better than a 1845

It's probably academic, as I don't see how one would sanction an improperly-nominated candidate even if the nomination rules were tighter. Striking them permanently from the ballot, without letting them substitute valid nominations, is a Central Asian dictator move.

But if nomination is supposed to be academic, all the more reason to publish the nominees once they've been nominated, so we can get on to the part of the election that isn't academic.

Agreed!

On reflection, using the take-up for the grading survey in 2019 was probably an unwise comparison.

Perhaps I should have pointed out instead that only ninety silver members bothered to vote in the recent election for Direct Members' Representatives.

Even worse is approx 1/3 of ECF votes held by representatives are never used at AGM or Finance meetings.

Just to let you know i reach out to my fellow Silver Member rep about a Joint Report

He is drafting something up and will be sent out to the Siiver members soon and i will check it

I will go on record to stay that I will always vote the way the Members tell me and not what i think or tell the members to vote a certain way.
that is the right way and hope the silver members will email us to tell how to vote and i will make sure when the report come out i can give the figures

However, I suggest he is likely to be misleading in implying in his address that Oliver Dowden's warm words regarding ChessFest - in part, an apology for not attending - were anything more than warm words. In the nicest possible way, Oliver Dowden isn't exactly the most influential figure in this government

Oliver Dowden's influence has returned to the back-benches. Does Nadine Dorries play chess?

Edit Dowden is apparently minister without portfolio at Cabinet Office as well as co-chair of the party so hasn't disappeared completely.

Interesting to see Durham CCA nominating Malcolm and Aga. In that I'm the Grading Officer for Durham CCA and have never been asked to vote on, or discuss, said nominations
According to Tim Wall, Durham CCA have gone a step further and decided to vote for Malcolm and Aga - and also Chris. See here.

Unanimously, eh?

Let my check my junk email folder...

...how odd. There was no Durham CCA meeting. Unless it was one hastily convened for the purpose of telling Tim to vote for whoever he wanted.

The website
https://dcca.org.uk/
announces it
An online meeting of the Durham County Chess Association will be held on Wednesday 15th September at 7.30 p.m. The link and the relevant papers will be published nearer the the date.
By contrast, the Berks AGM the same evening threw the ball back to the representative, by asking him to consult informally and brief Berks players on the issues, if he wanted feedback before deciding which way to vote.

Possibly as he is not actually on the committee?

Nor even a member of an affiliated club?
