Re: ECF meeting reports
John
Thank you for posting these up-dates. The minutes are not something I would seek out as a matter of course so this is appreciated. I am not at all surprised that the timing of meetings is an issue - an increasingly representative board will have to accommodate a range of different time conflicts. It is only a few years ago that I attended a local AGM on a midweek afternoon - far from ideal. In that regard it is good to see that the temporary use of Zoom is being evaluated for longer term benefits. The costs of attendance at Council are indeed far from trivial, so I'm sure this will be of interest to many.

There are several interesting items, such as comments about the location of future British Championships, the subject of another thread.

Anyone able to explain what "[Malcolm Pein] reported that he aimed to systematise seeking norms." means in practice?John Swain wrote: ↑Mon Jan 09, 2023 5:39 pmMinutes of the latest Board meeting (No. 151) held on 7 December 2022 may be viewed at:

No idea but possibly to create a more structured approach to helping our players get the opportunities they need. The signs since he has been involved are already very encouraging.Ian Thompson wrote: ↑Mon Jan 09, 2023 6:54 pmAnyone able to explain what "[Malcolm Pein] reported that he aimed to systematise seeking norms." means in practice?John Swain wrote: ↑Mon Jan 09, 2023 5:39 pmMinutes of the latest Board meeting (No. 151) held on 7 December 2022 may be viewed at:

From the report
The number of people playing ECF rated games OTB over a year is known. I don't think it has been published recently but it's usually around the 15,000 mark. The number of paying ECF members is also known and that's usually around the 10,000 mark.He (Malcom Pein) estimated that between the ECF, Delancey, Chess in Schools and Communities, EPSCA,etc there were about 120-140,000 active chess players
I would have thought the number of participants in Delancy, Chess in Schools and Communities, EPSCA should also be known, although there would likely be considerable duplication.
Woolly statements with an error of twice the ECF paying membership should in my view be avoided.

Chess.com claims around three million active users (4.4% of the population) from the UK in January, which is still not among their top ten countries.....

Re: ECF meeting reports
Has it been agreed as to what constitutes on a world-wide basis an "active player"?
For example if I was to task how many active players world-wide there were in
1970, 1980, 1990 etc, is there an established answer?

The minutes of Board meeting no.152, which I referred to earlier in the thread, related to 3 February (not March):

There have been two subsequent Board meetings:
2 March: https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-cont ... 032023.pdf
2 June: https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-cont ... d-2023.pdf

Thanks John. A good job by someone - I'm not exactly sure who to credit - in getting them out ahead of the council papers later this week. Some interesting stuff, which I'll cross post

Re: ECF meeting reports
Board consensus, if I read the minutes correctly, is to combine bronze/silver/gold but with 'grandfathering' for existing bronze. Is that how others read it?
