I am sure that your report as one of the Representatives for Silver Members will make interesting reading.

Will you be including a comment about how, when a majority of silver members expressed their views, unsurprisingly, in favour of retaining silver membership, you failed to register your six votes as Silver Representative at the October AGM in the crucial vote? Instead, you were busily casting thirteen votes in favour of amalgamating silver membership with gold on behalf of nine organisations (one of which, the MCCU, you were no longer its elected representative) when you have stated that only two of these organisations gave you a steer. The final vote was 136-122 in favour of amalgamating gold and silver memberships.

This is the only example I can think of where a turkey voted - repeatedly - for Christmas!

Hi ECF Silver Members

Apologies that this is coming out quite late - both of your reps have been very busy in their normal day jobs. We have the ECF Finance Council meeting coming up on Saturday 27th April. There are a number of motions but in reality most of them are procedural in nature and have little controversy to them.

The main one that affects all of you is a vote that follows on from the decision at the last meeting to merge the Silver and Gold memberships. Hopefully you all recall that we canvassed your views on that and we did put those views across. However the democratic vote was to merge the the two membership levels. Within this meeting they are detailing the logical consequence of that vote. So we will be voting on the decision to merge the two and for their fees to now be the average of the two at £33. Your reps are both in agreement that this seems to be a reasonable way of handling that decision and so as it stands, we intend to vote in favour of it. If there is strong feeling from you as members then that may change but it is unlikely that we have sufficient power to change the outcome on our own.

Other than that there is not a lot to advise you of. We will send an email letting you know how the meeting goes and to advise of anything relevant or interest that happens. As ever the papers for this meeting are available on the ECF website so please feel free to read them and then let us know if there are any questions that you have and want us to consider raising on your behalf.

Yes John, but the 2024/25 rate with the proposed price increase is £35. Old Gold members will be paying £4 less. Old Silver Members will be paying £8 more. Bronze Membership and non-members pay-to-play fees are set to rise by £2 to £20.

That's for Leagues and Club events. Congress pay to play fee rises from £ 9 to £ 15. That's quite a hike if the entry fee (for a one day) is £ 20 for members. It most affects Congresses that don't have a closed shop "members only" attitude.

Are they continuing the free year 1 membership for Juniors? Beyond year 1 it's doubling in price from £ 6 to £ 12.

So is Junior Bronze being abolished?

ECF membership rates

It used to be that Junior Bronze and Junior Silver rates were the same and it didn't seem there was any point in acquiring the former as the latter gave extra rights such as the right to play in non-FIDE-rated tournaments. So I guess a decision was taken to remove the Junior Bronze category... But, could there now (with the merging of Silver and Gold categories) be a case for reintroducing it to have a reduced rate for juniors playing league chess only? My guess is probably not as I think it would likely benefit very few players.

Not sure what John's getting at here. Usually - or in principle - the members' reps would have taken a look at the papers for the Council meeting, determined what was important to members, and written to those members to consult - the latter part with the help of the ECF Office and Andrew Walker, who was always very helpful when I was a members' rep.
