Surprised by Joy

Post by Richard James » Wed Nov 03, 2010 11:34 pm

I received an email this evening:

Hello Dear
My Name is joy i saw your contact at this site:
(http://www.englishchess.org.uk) ,and i love your profile on it, i think we can
know each other and build a relationship from there,so please write me
backthrough my email address for more detail about me and my picture as well,
remember that Love is the most important in life.thank and god bless you
please am waiting for your lovely reply soon.
thanks yours
joy

Can someone explain how this was picked up? I'm not sure where my email address appears on the ECF website at present. I've received several similar emails over the past few days saying they'd seen my profile on the net, but without quoting the site.

Has anyone else received this or am I the only lucky one?

Presumably from here:

http://www.englishchess.org.uk/?page_id=525

- found via a Google search for:
site:www.englishchess.org.uk "Richard James"

(I was slightly worried for a minute, as I'd suggested that our Scottish Olympiad board 4 look at the resources on chesskids.com to help with a school club she is involved with.)

Thanks, Heather. I note that the information is out of date. I have several websites but http://www.rjcc.org.uk is no longer one of them.

I use this email riddler on my sites to avoid this sort of spam. As far as I can tell it's effective.

When I read the title of this thread I thought it was going to be a discussion about Clive Staples Lewis and possibly any chess career he might have had (like any notable games against John Ronald Reuel Tolkien)!

I occasionally find such similar messages in my spam folder, although I haven't had any personalised in such a way. Their life expectancy after I ascertain what they are is about five seconds.

I was waiting to see who'd be the first to pick up the CS Lewis reference.

 I'm assuming once you've sent your lovely reply, Joy will have some reason why she needs you to transfer funds into her Paypal account immediately.

I've received an email from Joy this very afternoon. Moreover, it got through my normally effective spam filter.

I receive 10-15 of these every day. Seeing as none of them are from my wife and assuming it's not because I am popular ( :D ) it is definitely spam, it should be ignored, in the same way as these people who have millions of pounds they want to send to you! The comment above referring to sudden needs to transfer money into a paypal account is probably very close to the mark!
