Don't on-line entries update themselves???
Any postings on here represent the truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God,

The entry for Sheffield on 6 July 2011 jumped to 569. It will be interesting to see tomorrow whether North Shields can keep pace with that.
All looking good. :D

Pedant that I am though, I must point that this years event starts on 22nd July, whilst last years started on 24th July. That means that you need to compare entries for North Shields today with those for Sheffield on 7th July (not 5th).

"Don't on-line entries update themselves???"

'Fraid not. We don't publish an entry until we have confirmed national federation membership and payment. We have the fantastic Andrew Walker at the ECF office to thank for putting most of the entries up on the website. Roger Edwards processes the paper entry forms into a spreadsheet and I do the same with the online entries - Andrew compiles these into the lists on the website.

Someone can help me design a less time consuming way of doing things? - if I continue next year!

Opportunities for misusing data are thick as autumnal leaves that straw the brooks in Vallombrosa, it would be a Paradise Lost to stop it now!

Anyone know what the current entries figures are? On facebook it says that they are going very well but there are no figures.

Lara's at the Scottish but has gone to lunch so I can't ask her at the moment though I don't think she has the current figure anyway. Roger Edwards will have the most up to date figures.

But of course there are figures and figures - eg number of entries received v number of entries processed (inc cheques cleared).

Sounds like it is going really well anyway. It will be interesting to see the final figures as it is a seaside venue and up north. Lets hope it gets the record!

Trying to pull the money together to attend a couple of the events. !!

A bit demoralising for parents and others who are investing in Chess and ofcourse their children to see money being
blootered away on what is often a competition of egos.

Always uplifting when benefactors give to Chess. This years Scottish Championships and also the large Trust fund come to mind. Also thousands of volunteers around the country give of their time freely to keep clubs and tournaments running. Their priceless efforts to promote Chess shouldn't be frittered away needlessly either.

Time for all factions anywhere and everywhere to adopt a policy of 'Chess' first I think. In these battles where the lawyers are the only real victors it's better to find ways of working together. Give a little bit of self/ego for the betterment of the whole. (Message to my self also)

Also those who believe in the game/sport and it's value shouldnt' let it be highjacked by others for their agenda either.

Just added up all the entries on the website. I make it 561 including rapidplay entries of 46. Of course there must be quite a lot being processed, in transit and about to be sent. Does look like it might be one for the record books.

I make it 634 this afternoon. Pretty much the same as Sheffield at this stage. There was no update on 9 or 10 July 2011 (it being a weekend) so the comparable update is for 11 July 2011, when there were 638 entries. Overall it depends on how many more entries are still in the processing pipeline, but figures are hugely encouraging.

A very welcome announcement tonight that Grand Master Matthew Turner has joined the ranks of contenders for the British Championships. Tables and chairs are likely to be overturned as chess enthusiasts fight for a favourable seat in Andrew Martin's Commentary Room for an explanation of what the hell is going on in Matthew's games! A real delight and a treat for spectators. Good to have you back Matthew. We live in interesting times.

The first Scottish GM to take part in some years.

I don't think there has been a Scottish GM player since 2007. During the period 2004–2007, the British title went to a Scottish player each time: three wins by Jonathan Rowson, then one by Jacob Aagaard.
Also, for each of the four years from 2003 to 2007 when the title of British women’s champion was awarded, it went to Keti Arakhamia-Grant, a Georgian who married a Scot in 1996 and settled in Edinburgh.

I assume you mean Scottish GM, not Scottish player. I played Clement Sreeves last year

For people who make calculations on the number of tournament entries.
About 10% of the entries come in from Sunday 22 July. The final tally isn't known until Monday afternoon 30 July.

I am very pleased Matthew Turner is playing.
I remember him as a chirpy 12 year old trail-blazer. It was very rare then for juniors to play in the Major Open.
Also it gives a more realistic chance for there to be a GM norm. Having 6 GMs makes it more feasible. A player has to meet 4 in 11 rounds, or possibly 3 in the first 9 and in each case achieve a 2600+ performance rating against a 2380+ field.
