Following on from the success of Sheffield's event, I'm starting a thread nice and early to make sure that the 2012 event gets the maximum coverage!

Dates: 22nd July-4th August 2012

Venue: Parks Leisure Centre, North Shields

Map: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?q=P ... 3029619881

Website: http://www.britishchesschampionships.co.uk/

Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/britishchess with some lovely photos of the venue from Lara Barnes

Flickr Page: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1655309@N24/ where we will have another photographic competition. Take a look at some of this year's entries!

Olympics: will take place from 25th July (Women's Football) to 12th August, with the peak likely to be Saturday 4th August.
"Saturday, 4 August is already being dubbed as "Super Saturday" with the climax of the heptathlon competition and the women's 100m final taking prime-time slots. The Olympic rowing and swimming competitions will also reach a conclusion."
We will have large screen TVs to view the events.

Tourism: http://www.northumberland-coast.co.uk/whitley_bay.php is the best website I have found so far for information about that coast, and if you like walking http://www.northtynesidewalks.co.uk/ then you can click on the 'North Shields Discovery walk' amongst others.

For information about travelling slightly further inland this is useful - http://www.visitnorthumberland.com/

Ferries: you can get to the venue via

Ijmuiden / Amsterdam in the Netherlands - http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/

and from

Bergen in Norway - http://www.fjordline.ferries.org/

Reduced admission fees to local attractions for players and families is currently being investigated by local council officials.

And as I've said elsewhere - there are Olympic footie games at St James during the championships, with tickets still available ... so for those able to plan that far ahead - get them quick.

Yes, for those who have not sampled the joys of Northumberland & the northeast there is much to see & enjoy...not least the beaches on a sunny day. The beach at South Shields to mention but one....just a short Ferry trip across the Tyne... I have just returned from a w/e break....
Tynemouth is a nice centre with its Priory & Castle (English Heritage), as are many such historical attractions. Bambrough Castle, Alnwick Castle, Craigside, Holy Island and many others are worth a days visit....take an extra couple of days to see the sights.
Someone mentioned football at St James`s Park.... I`ll be at Old Trafford for the Olympic matches..
If you want to visit Sunderland and do the `tour` of the Stadium of Light, I can recommend it, even for those not particularly inclined towards football. If you wanted, you can even book a Sunday lunch at the ground.....good value I`m told. But they were disappointing against Chelsea the other day.

Enjoy......

A list of players qualified to play in next year's championships has just been added to the ECF website at http://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-conte ... s2012.html.

Raymond Keene has an active rating? Really?

Although quoted as Active 2350 and above, the actual rule is active 2350 and above or IM/GM.

from http://www.britishchess2011.com/qualify ... s_2011.htm
*Qualification by Grading, Rating or Rating Performance*
5) A rating of 218 (2350) or higher in a current British Isles national grading list (not Rapidplay) or any FIDE list between July 2010 and July 2011. If a player is not an IM or a GM, the rating must be active.

Although Roger is correct, he is confusing the issue by linking to the 2011 qualification rules.

The 2012 rules have slight differences and are in page 6 of the the 2011 Championship programme.

If anyone wishes me to change the caption from "Active Rating 2350 or above" to highlight that some IMs or GMs may be inactive, I can do so, but I think this is being unnecessarily pedantic.

I disagree. I find the heading very confusing.

I believe I suggested to you last year that the category should be split into "GMs and IMs" and "Active Rating 2350 or above". I still think that would be much preferable.

Why is it that arbiters, instead of admitting to mistakes, start name calling ?
It's similar to recent discussions about moving before the oppo has pressed the clock; rather than admit they had misunderstood the rule some arbiters posted saying it was bad manners or causing distraction to move in that way even though the rules allowed it.

OK. You've got me. What's the answer?

Possibly because it's more fun. Few people like admitting mistakes. Personally I revel in it. Then, on the rare occasion I get something right, everybody is so surprised, I get excessive credit.

I know that Neville is no longer maintaining the qualifiers list, but who is?

I ask because a recent event advertised itself as having a qualification place and as late as last week, was still on the list without a name attached. It's now not there. It's useful to have events listed that haven't taken place, that way potential entrants know that a place can be available.
