ECF Library has opened!

Post by John Upham » Thu Jun 12, 2008 8:21 pm

I believe I saw a brief note on the ECF web site stating that the ECF Office would be shut for the opening of the ECF Chess Library.

Does anyone know any more details about this?

Where is it? Is it in Hastings somewhere?

Is Bernard Cafferty the Chief Librarian? :D

Was it funded from the Golombek part of the PIF?

Who runs it?

Is the collection open to the public?

Is the catalogue online?

Does every item have the same Dewey Decimal Classification of 794.1 ???

An enquiring mind wishes to know more. :D

It's taken a while to open properly as it was first "open" at the Hastings congress 18 months ago. There've been reports in "Chess Moves" and by the BCM editor.

A bit of google came up with

"Clarke, Croker, Diggle, Golombek, Jordan, and ECF collection"

I wasn't aware that Katie Price had donated her chess book collection : one learns something new every day! :D

I'll resist the temptation to make any Jordan jokes. I have to confess, however, that I don't know the identity of the Jordan who kindly donated the books.

However, having skimmed through some parts of the catalogue, this looks like a fantastic resource with some really interesting titles. However, it is always interesting to note the dross in other people's collections and find that the percentage is much the same as in mine!!

John Hi I have never had a catalogue - what are you on about! I have been a buyer and seller of chess books for many years - and a collector for even longer

My mum used to do much of her shopping from what she referred to as "John Moore's Catalogue"

A new one used to arrive every few months. Must have taken hours to produce.

Ah John - sorry my lack of a sense of humour. John Moores though - and although I am enormously successful - not quite as much that family. To whom strangely enough, my wife is related - although her name is only mine by marriage

A qualified librarian writes: you wouldn't use Dewey in a specialist library, precisely for this reason!
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

What would be the solution in this case?

Quite likely, devise your own. You would probably consult other chess libraries first, though, and see if they'd developed anything which you could use, or adapt.
