Re Geoff's search for the punchline, I note that termites cause damage to wood. And there are also various wood boring insects of the beetle variety.

Given that, I reckon some combination of

'wood', 'wood-pusher' and 'boring'

- must be the basis of some jokes.

Anyone care to give it a go?

Of course, to tailor it to Gidders and RDK OBE, I would think a gratuitous Shakespearean reference might be needed as well.

Okay fair point. That said, I once drew with Crouch at a congress(late 1970's) when he was rated at 220 and I was 155 but that wont get me into the history books or chess literature.

Forgetting the internet which book does Vaganian- Giddins appear in.

Geoff has obviously been in Edinburgh (Got on an express to there instead of the local train to Bethnal Green late one night?) long enough to have become partial to porridge. But, what the Dickens? It was Oliver Twist who asked for more.
I see from Geoff's own mugshot that he was ubiquitous in Mad magazine, so probably no copyright problems there.
For your information there was another, older US comic weekly magazine called - you guessed it - Puck!

Oliver Twist is not one of Shakespeare's characters.
He was the friend of Tom Sawyer in Gulliver's Travels when
they went around the World in 80 days.

No. If you take a picture from the internet and publish it, the onus is on you to discover who owns the copyright. There was a case recently, where someone found a picture on the internet, tracked down the owner of the copyright and asked permission several times to use it. Not receiving a reply, he went ahead and used the picture in his new book, and then received a letter from the copyright holder demanding recompense...

I've found a really good photograph (on the internet) I want to use in my next book and have now (with help from a copyright expert) discovered who owns it. If they refuse permission, I won't be able to use it, which is a pain, but as it's a foreign government that owns it, it would be foolish to risk their wrath - they can afford the legal costs! (And ten years inside is the maximum penalty, which is fairly sobering.)

Taking a picture to use in a book (for financial gain) is I agree is not on.
But a joke....?

Anyway, have decided to go back add credit to picture.
At least know I know now who took it.

People will surely say that I must have too much time on my hands, but I've just run through the 'Termitewatch' posts on the Anteater's old blog and found the following photos with either faulty or zero attribution:

Termitewatch (2): Officer Crabtree (wrongly credited)
Termitewatch (3): Officer Crabtree (different photo; wrongly credited)
Termitewatch (4): Stewart Reuben (uncredited)
Termitewatch (5): Gordon Ramsay (uncredited)
Termitewatch (9): Officer Crabtree again (uncredited)
Termitewatch (14): Daleks (wrongly credited)

Officer Crabtree and the Daleks (can't wait for that episode!) are almost certainly BBC copyright.

In addition, Termitewatch (8) and (11) use two identical illustrations but with different credits. One or two other pictures have suspect attributions, but I can't be bothered to check them out - I think I've made my point.
