Dresden Olympiad

So, who should be and who's going to be in the England teams?

I presume British and English champions Stu Conquest and Keith Arkell are in based on their summer triumphs, together with Gawain Jones and David Howell based on rating. Not sure who else.

What do you think?

Sponsorship? Adams and Short at the top of the team would like pretty good.

True - if we can afford them.

Think maybe Hebden rather the Arkell if there's a choice

It's now only 5 boards so finance and availability permitting, I would expect the likely team to be :-

Adams
Short
Howell
Jones
Conquest

It's a close call, I agree, but Mark played well in the last European teams in 2007. He started with 5 out of 7 including a win against Illescas, Admittedly he then faded and lost in the last two rounds against Georgia (Pantsulaia) and Ukraine (Volokytin) but with a plus score against a strong field, I would give him another chance.

Anyway if as Roger says it's only going to be 5, then if the money is there and the players are all available, Roger's 5 will be the team.

Hebden had a relatively poor record in Olympiads, so it is not clear to me why he was selected for the Euro teams (then again, England selection has generally been poor, as results show)

Arkell's performance in the Euro Club in 2007 was good

and 2006 was not bad either

Personally, if available I would like to see the younger players given a chance, Jones, Howell, Gordon, Haslinger all seem to be improving, but I'm not sure what it says if you don't play your own English champions

Would we really need to stump up money to field Adams and Short for the Olympiad to get them to play? In the olympics, there is no prize money and people are falling over backwards to compete. The people who compete make money through all the other events they compete in and endorsements.

Excellent news, well done to the ECF for making this possible.

Liverpool continues to have a major effect on English chess

Quite a coincidence, I recommended LV= for the first time to a client at the end of last week, makes me more pleased with that decision!

I visited the World Museum yesterday, very impressive, the chess was excellent and my 3 year old daughter met Nigel Short
