At some point Howell may now have a Bxg7 Kxg7 Re7+ K back Rxc7 tactic to create connected passed pawns on the kingside. Perhaps Hebden has to risk defending KRB -v- KR, instead?

Edit: Hebden's resigned instead.

Meanwhile, can anyone explain what on earth Simon Williams thinks he doing?

Rf4-f2 at some point will be deadly, I assume?

Was 43. c5 needed in any way, shape or form?

Win for Howell, who showed his class in this game. I see that in the current edition of CHESS he recommends switching off the computer. Improving players please note!

56...Rf3+ looked strong I think. But Ravi's played 56...Rxe4+ instead.

I don't understand why Simon didn't play 41. h5 It just seemed so obvious?

Going back to Hawkins, has he made a quantum leap? It would not be unknown for a 30-something. His play in week one suggests yes. His play in week two suggests maybe not.

Nobody rose to my statement about delayed resignation many pages back, so I'll try again. If I were Andrew Lewis, FM at 2300, very experienced, I would be insulted that my opponent hadn't resigned yet (move 51). Don't know his opponent, but I guess he is young. There have been many examples this year.

we're not allowed to talk about 180/190 strength players bringing their club habits with them and lowering the prestige of the British...

There is no playoff this year, not sure about what happens to the English Championship.

Fair enough to make someone play out R & P v R. I would do it myself. In general, are juniors being coached not to resign? That can be embarrassing if people go OTT.

Wonder why not? I thought the reason for the early start was to allow for a potential play- off in the afternoon?
