Hypothetically, do people agree that if Howell abided by a rule that he could think for no more than say 8 minutes for any one move his rating would increase significantly?

Thanks - that helps a bit. Didn't understand anything about that game, it just seemed like random bonkers early on.

Mu. I don't think he's any more capable of abiding by this rule than I am of abiding by the equal and opposite one.Nick Burrows wrote:Hypothetically, do people agree that if Howell abided by a rule that he could think for no more than say 8 minutes for any one move his rating would increase significantly?

That analysis (Hawkins - Pert) strikes me as pretty ropey. As the game transpires Qe5+ looks like it was slightly inaccurate. Instead Bxf6 Qxf6 Qe3+ looks like an advantage for White.

Difficult to see how he's going to hold that. His king's cut off, White has the outside passed pawn and is of course a pawn up as well.Nick Burrows wrote:Chances of Hebden holding?

Re: The British itself!
Seems like he's on to a loser to me. Pawn down, same coloured bishops, pawns on both sides of the board, passed pawns already, his rook in front rather than behind the opposing passed pawn, facing a nicely centralised king able to dart to the queenside to support his passed pawn and hold up the opposing passed pawn. Only thing going for him really is that the queening square of the passed White pawn is of the opposite colour to the bishops.Nick Burrows wrote:Chances of Hebden holding?

I did say "a bit" - it didn't help greatly. I would like someone to explain the relevant points of that game, I really understood "Bahnhof".Matthew Turner wrote:That analysis (Hawkins - Pert) strikes me as pretty ropey. In Hawkins-Pert, was there any mileage in Bc4 after ....c6 -presumably not because I've not seen it mentioned ... but it looked good down at my coffee house

Well he can do it - as shown when he is short of time!IM Jack Rudd wrote:Mu. At the time control David thouhgt for over half an hour over Bxe4 but I don't really understand Mark's response. I had assumed David was worried about Rd8. I assume Mark is just lost now.

What the hell is Howell doing letting his clock run down like this? It's entirely unnecessary.

Charlie Storey (aka Sniper Chief) for most combative player award again? Has again managed to go through 11 rounds without a draw...
