I should also have said that I would encourage others apart from Jack to think about standing for office.

The president role must be changed to a figure position leaving all control with the CEO so age should be of no importanceBen Purton wrote:Edge, the people who vote the president in won't vote for someone like me/My age, guranteed. They probaly must be 40+benedgell wrote:Purton for president!!

What do you think the role of ECF President should be?
And what would you intend to do in the role?
I can then answer your question, I hope
Cheers

Sorry, but age does matter. A figurehead has a point, otherwise why even have it? It is your image, the thing that outsiders first see from the quayside.
Your President may well not have executive powers but s/he needs to be first class at PR, and presentable to a far wider public. As that public will, crucially, include senior individuals within government and commerce, who are likely to be of some maturity, it is essential in my view that the ECF representative have some gravitas, and a wide experience of the world, which is generally acquired with passing years.
I really don't envisage a President of less than middle age.
Young Turks should look at the position of FIDE Delegate.

A key role for a figurehead Predsident would be to represent the Federation in the media, so I see a great advantage in having someone no older than middle-aged!
Of course you also want someone who has plenty of time (retired?) has plenty of money and perhaps even has business contact to get sponsorship, but of course those sort of people just don't exist?
I hope the ECF's consultation or selection process or whatever it is has come to an end and someone is looking up Dave Norwood's number.

I agree with Matthew (!). Norwood would be an excellent candidate.

But if it's image that matters, why would we assume that this image would necessarily involve being older rather than younger? To whom are we necessarily seeking to appeal?Paul Buswell wrote:Sorry, but age does matter. A figurehead has a point, otherwise why even have it? Doctor JDM Nunn.
Failing that Speelman or Mestel.
I would ask Adam Raoof but he would only decline.
Perhaps the presidency of Steve Davis needs to be reconsidered. Is that what we want again? and that Dave Norwood might lob us a few mill .. oh, or Claire Summerscale, she's bags of energy, and was born in Basingstoke ..

After discussing this with a couple of people whose opinions I respect, I have decided that I will be standing for the post of ECF President. I would also like to say that I would prefer to be part of a contested election for this post.

Good stuff. What do you imagine will be the day-to-day roles and responsibilities of the post?FM Jack Rudd wrote:After discussing this with a couple of people whose opinions I respect, I have decided that I will be standing for the post of ECF President. That's if there is a role of ECF President left to stand for, come OctoberFM Jack Rudd wrote:After discussing this with a couple of people whose opinions I respect, I have decided that I will be standing for the post of ECF President. Council took a straw poll on Saturday and voted 14-7 in facour of making the President a figure head. That vote is not binding, but gives the board a steer as to what council wants to see going forward. Council also said they wanted a non-executive chairman put in place to chair the board and council meetings.
