This tournament should be promoted to every club in the land. A team of four is an ideal number for an outing by car once a year.
4NCL directors recused themselves from the vote ~ good, but what about the ECF directors on the 4NCL payroll as arbiters ? did they feel any conflict of interest?

the ECF received a commission for hotel rooms sold at the Nat club open , this income will now be lost.

no wonder fees are rising !
Bob, the 1990s are calling and they agree that there should be sufficient interest in the event :P

A combination of prize money/ sponsorship would soon attract teams to the open, that plus a place in the European teams event of course.

If a club needed to hire players to give itself even a half chance of winning, the rules would ban you from taking part. A typical local league first team over its top four boards might have 1*200-210, 1* 180-190, 2* 160-180. That's nowhere near strong enough to make entering an Open plausible. A London league team with 4* 200-210 might do rather better and be legitimate locally, but such teams are reluctant to travel, even to take part as themselves in the 4NCL.

Yes, the 1990s are talking about the Leigh sponsorship very enthusiastically. And awarding a ECC qualifying place would mean that England would, in theory, be reduced to two nominations: we are generally only entitled to three nominees that finish in the top half of an event with over 20 GMs, ie, the 4NCL.

It's begun. I've just entered two teams, one each in the 150 and 125 sections. I hope to see lots of returning faces and some new ones too. It really is a fantastic weekend. I can't see an entry list - so maybe we’re first. Any others mulling it over? Some big questions - will the mighty Redditch be back after winning two titles last season and can our perennial rivals Greater London (we meet six times this season) repeat their successes of 2016? Love chess - see you there!

We (Redditch) are currently struggling for enough players to confirm to attempt to defend both our titles.
With two weeks or so before the entry fee price rise, we are hopeful that we can still put in two teams, but it may be only one.

Can someone advise what the entry fee per team is? The on-line form just seems to say it will rise to £30.00 a team in March.

Neil - It's £25 per team, but you get £10 off for every three people staying at the hotel. So we have two teams (£50) and nine people staying overnight (-£30). So for us, the overall fee is a very reasonable £10 per team.
